An archive of approximately 75 photographs taken by an American WAAC trained in the United States and stationed in China. The images vary in sizes, and some of them are post-war and taken in the United States. The vernacular photographs show scenes of China, some with handwritten captions on the back and others with stamped captions. There are also images from Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, when the WACs were training, and other domestic photographs. There are a couple of photographs of Alfred M. Hurt, an American diplomat (or perhaps spy) stationed in China; he was also the Deputy Governor of the United States Trust Territories in the Pacific and married to Claire Luce. Some of the photographs have handwritten annotations on the back, some have stamped descriptions (sometimes in Chinese) and some have nothing. The WAAC was established to work with the Army and the women were sent all over the world. Congress set a ceiling at 150,000 women, and they were paid and provided with living quarters, uniforms and food. Nearly all of the photographs are in fine condition or better.
