First edition. 8vo. Cloth, titles stamped in red on the spine, xi [blank], 180 pp., acknowledgments, prologue, illustrated from photographs, portrait, map, epilogue, bibliography, index. Bierce disappeared from the American scene in May, 1979, when his column in the San Francisco Argonaut abruptly stopped. The period between his disappearance and his sudden reappearance in January, 1881, has until now remained as mysterious as his final and complete disappearance in Mexico in 1913. With this account of Bierce's experiences in gold mining in the Black Hills, Dakota Territory, the author solves the mystery of May, 1879. Excellent research and discovery about an interesting and complex character. Fine in dust jacket.
