First edition. 8vo. Original brown cloth, borders decorated in black, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, brown front and rear endpapers, 360 pp., teg, frontispiece, preface, introductory, illustrated from 20 plates from photographs by Mr. Homan; 21 plates from sketches by Sergeant Gloster; 29 text illustrations from diagrams and plans by the author and others; three maps, including a black & white folding map housed in a pocket at the front, appendix, index. In April, 1883, the seven member expedition organized at Vancouver Barracks, Washington Territory, and left Portland, Oregon in May. They took the inland passage to Alaska as far as Chilkat country. They hired some 60 Chilkats to form a pack train to the head waters of the Yukon River, where a primitive raft was built and sailed through some 150 miles of lakes and shooting rapids, eventually floating along for 1,300 miles and covering the entire 2,000 mile reach of the Yukon River. They returned home via the Bering Sea, touching at the Aleutian Islands. Decker 35: 27 says "This is a description of the military exploring expedition made in 1883 to explore the Yukon River to determine its military utility. There are many good illustrations........" Some light cosmetic restoration to the spine and corners, else a very good copy.
