Publication: The Canadian Pictorial & Illustrated War News, 1885, Toronto
Light wear to the spine11" x 15 1/2" color, pictorial wrappers, 24 pp., 4 columns per page, illustrated, plates, advertisements. This is Part I of a planned two part History of Riel's Rebellion. Part I is published July 4th, 1885, with Part II to be issued on or about August 1, 1885. Louis Riel was a popular leader of the Metis race, or, Franco-Indians of the northwest who in 1849 led a revolt against the authority of the Hudson Bay Company. Later in 1885 a brief and unsuccessful uprising by the Metis people of the District of Saskatchewan under Louis Riel's leadership against the government of Canada. The Metis believed that the Canadians had failed to address the protection of their rights, their land and their survival as a distinct people. Despite some early victories the rebellion effectively ended for the Metis with their defeat at the siege of Batoche, Saskatchewan, the eventual scattering of their allied Aboriginal forces elsewhere, and the trial and hanging of Louis Riel. The full page plates are attractive and point out some segments of the battles. Light wear to the spine, and a few tiny closed tears to the fore-edges, else a very good copy.
