First edition. 4to. Original 12 1/4" x 9 1/2" string-tied, pictorial, stiff wrappers, n. p. (80 pp.), preface, illustrated from photographs, portraits. A history of the First United States Cavalry (1883-1919) is provided. The unit was involved in the war with Mexico and participated in numerous Indian campaigns from Oregon, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona with the Apaches to the Northern Plains against the Nez Perce. Also gives accounts of the Modoc War and the capture of Captain Jack, Poston Charlie, and Scarfaced Charlie. Also provides a year by year accounting of the various campaigns including the numbers of soldiers and Indians killed. A list of the field officers and staff is provided along with a photographic listing of each troop accompanied by rosters of men. Covers are soiled with wear to the fore-edges, a small tear to the bottom edge next to the spine of the front cover, a closed tear to the fore-edge of the rear cover, and a small tear to the margin of page 3 of the text, else a very good and serviceable booklet. Scarce and overlooked by the references and auction records.
