Illustrated by portraits of the author, Gen. Canby, Dr. Thomas, Capt. Jack, Schonchin, Scar-Faced Charley, Black Jim, Boston Charley, Tobey and Riddle, and eleven other. A former Superintendent of Indian Affairs, Meacham served as chairman of the Modoc War Peace Commission, and Cowan notes that "this work on the Modoc War was written by a most competent author on the subject, making this volume of great historic value." The illustrations are portraits of the principals in the war, as well as "Spirited and Life-like Engravings, of actual scenes from Modoc Indian life, as witnessed by the author." Six Guns 1475 says: "Has much on Captain Jack, the Modoc outlaw." An extremely difficult title to find in the deluxe binding. This is our first copy in many years. Former owner's name and date [1876] on front preliminary page, covers gently rubbed, else a near fine, bright, tight, internally clean copy of a difficult title.
