Publication: Photographed By Luke C Dillon, n d (ca 1890), Washington
Three (3) cabinet photographs of the George Washington’s Mt. Vernon (one exterior and two interior), circa 1890. Each of the 6 1/2" x 4.1/4" mounts are titled on the back side and have the imprint, "Copyrighted by Luke C. Dillon, Photographer of Mount Vernon, Office at Pullman’s Gallery, 935 Penn. Avenue, Washington, D.C." The titles of the three photos include: "East View of Mount Vernon Mansion;" "Washington's Room and Bed on Which He Died;" and "Ohio Room, Mount Vernon Mansion." The Mount Vernon association granted exclusive contracts with several photographers in the 19th century to take photos of the estate and the tourists it attracted as a revenue source. Luke C. Dillon was given the contract in 1883, which he held until 1894. He was well known for taking large size photographs of touring groups at Mt. Vernon and selling many in the group the same print, a rather profitable venture. The cabinet photos offered here were available for sale at the mansion. Each of the photographs is in fine condition.
