Publication: Natrona County Historical Society, 1930, Casper
First Edition. Stiff Pictorial Wrappers. 41pp Numerous illustrations. 2 Maps. An excellent record of the history of this famous landmark on the Oregon/California Trail. During July 3-6, 1930, there was a centennial celebration at Independence Rock in Natrona County, Wyoming. The printed program for the 3-day celebration identifies the event as Commemorating The Covered Wagon Centennial 1830-1930 by the Oregon Trail Memorial Association and Boy Scouts Of America. Additionally, the Knights of Columbus are Commemorating The Naming Of The Great Record Of The Desert By Father DeSmet In 1840, and the Ancient, Free And Accepted Masons are Commemorating The 68th Anniversary Of The First Lodge Held In This Part Of The Rocky Mountains July 4th, 1862. This copy was given to attendee, Jack E. Haynes, the son of famous photographer Frank J. Haynes, both of whom were official photographers for Yellowstone National Park. It was presented to Haynes by Dan W. Greenburg, Director of Publicity for the event, and author of the Foreword for this work, as well as future books about Wyoming history. Tipped-in is the actual 4 page Program for the celebration. Tipped-in on the inside of the front wrapper is a Courtesy Press Card, signed by Dan Greenburg, giving Haynes special privileges for viewing and/or photographing the event. Signed presentation to Haynes by Dan Greenburg at top of title page. Haynes has written his initials in upper corner of front wrapper: JEH 1930. The pamphlet has been bound into protective boards. On verso of title page is listed that 50 copies are bound in boards, but we are unsure of whether this copy is one of the 50. Inside of protective boards is a bookplate of Haynes Library, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Lastly, the following is neatly written in ink on upper portion of the front board, the handwriting of which appears to likely be written by Jack E. Haynes: Independence Rock. The Great Record of the Desert. by Robert Spurrier Ellison June 25,1930. First Printing. Pictorial wrappers are near fine. Protective boards are very good with light wear to corners. A truly unique and desirable association copy!
