"Between 1862 and 1866 nearly four thousand miles of stage lines were owned and operated by Holladay. The communication lines between the East and isolated communities of the West were maintained by the stage lines during the Civil War when disruption would have been disastrous to the Union. The original records of the Holladay Overland Mail and Express Company were destroyed in the San Francisco fire of 1906. The author's research was conducted through newspapers and periodicals, private papers and personal interviews."---Clark/Brunet.
